Kate Moss. Give me your cheek bones!

It takes a while to get your head around why some everyday people look stunning in photographs and equally some beautiful people in real life come up very plain in photos. I'm still learning. One of the major factors is strong features. Cheek bones. Jaw line. Eye brows.

People may say 'But surely being skinny is the the only thing photographers look for...' But no. And if that is the case, said photographer may miss out on some amazing work.

Take Kate Moss.

Yes, she is on the leaner side but it's her cheek bones and over all face structure that has made her the favorite for magazines and what major photographers pay big money for. Face to face, Kate is quite normal looking. (I saw her at a party once, but couldn't get near her cause some woman was 'guarding' her. And I was really drunk. And I was wearing Birkenstocks. Oh, the shame!) And if you see her in interviews and shows, she seems very down to earth and relaxed. Throw a camera her way and her features send off this persona of quiet and mysterious beauty.

On the other hand I've seen photoshoots with really sexy people in front of the camera and when the image comes out you realise M&S Foodhall photos inspire you more.

It's a tricky one and can only really be a trial and error process, I believe.
Here is a video of Kate working with James Brown for his product range:

I want you, Kate.

Pat McGrath up in my face!

Pat McGrath.
PAT MCGRATH!
'Pat McGrath's here to do your wedding day make up...'
Could you imagine!
Pat's work became recognised in the early 1990's with the amazing i-D magazine and can now works with major houses such as Prada, Miu Miu and Dolce and Gabbana. She also is in charge of Max Factor and Cover Girl.
Remember when we talked about Guido Palau?
Pat and Guido have been called 'The Dream Team' because of their collaboration with catwalk shows and photoshoots.
The main fact I love about Pat McGrath is she had no formal training.
Pat just kept playing.
Keep playing.

Pringle of Scotland.

A beautiful short film directed by Ryan McGinley and featuring Tilda Swindon shot near Tilda's home in Inverness.

Amazing cinematography and not only brilliant for brand awareness but also a brilliant advert for the Scottish landscape.

Get to Scotland.

Julian Assange...

Well, this man has ruffelled some feathers lately, hasn't he! I know many people have many things to say to him, but if I saw him I'd tell him to stop dying his hair!
The regrowth looks awful.
Embrace it.
You could grow a power cut like our dear friend Miranda...

enokae... Where do you find them?

enokae was born and raised in Ireland and was a graphic designer for ten years before switching to photography. This was perhaps the best move for the now London based photographer because after spending a decade giving business brand identity, (his work can still be seen on the streets of Dublin...), he has seen what works commercially and in turn, what people want.
enokae first makes sure his models are have stunning features (cheekbones, strong jaw lines, oozing sex), captures every angle and spends hours exploring them in post production. This is not to say he cannot make us 'normies' look stunning. He once threw me into a simple Topman jacket and tee, took a few snaps, put his own flavour into the cleaning up and BAM! People who hadn't seen me for years until that pic on Facebook were (a bit too) shocked on how the photo made me look taller and younger. I had to keep telling them 'But, that's not ME!... Well, yes, it is me... But an enokae version of me...' Friends were confused.
His final result is clean, expensive, sexy and secretive.
Watch him.

Guido Palau.

If you have admired hair on the catwalk for houses such as Marc Jacobs, Prada, Balenciaga, Versace, Lanvin and Calvin Klein or the print adverts for Louis Vuitton, Mulberry and Roberto Cavalli, (breathe...) chances are you are looking and the work of one of the worlds most in demand hair stylists Guido Palau.
This is the man who gave us the super big afro for LV, or the double hair fins separated by a braid that looked like something straight out of a sci-fi film for Alexander McQueens final show right through to the easy, sexy waves for Versace. This man can do anything.
A completely different attitude to the fabric of hair and it's capabilities.
Last year alone for fashion weeks around the world, he and his 70 or so assistance styled 7 shows in New York, 11 shows in Paris, 2 shows in London and 6 shows in Milan.
You get the idea.
He's good.
Be his assistant.

Finding the man...

It has been harder than I thought to find examples of a cut that I've been cutting on a few of my men. I call it the 'Daddy bought me a Land Rover' cut, not that I say that to the face of the boys. But I love the cut.
The tip is to leave around and inch and a half disconnected from just below the recession at the front hair line and blend in with slicing through the disconnected length.

Luke Hersheson...

Makes it look so easy.
Amazing work.

Todd Selby.

Just so cool. All of it.

Fashion Porn.

It will get in your head.

Birth.

I really hoped that he was Sean,

I really... I wanted him to be Sean.

But I knew he wasn't Sean.

I knew it.

This is insane, I mean...

It's insane, you know?

But I couldn't help it.

I couldn't.

Meryl.

It's on this day. This day of all days. Her fate becomes clear to her.

I remember one morning getting up at dawn... There was such a sense of possibility. You know? That feeling? And I remember thinking to myself 'This is the beginning of happiness! This is where it starts. And, of course, there will always be more!'... It never occurred to me it wasn't the beginning... It was happiness. It was the moment. Right then.

Another divorce. Splashed across page six. Imagine what they're going to write about me."The dragon-lady. Career obsessed, snow queen... Drives away another Mister Priestly." Rupert Murdoch should cut me a cheque for all the papers I sell for him.
Anyway... I don't really care what anybody writes about me. But... My Girls.
It's just so unfair on the Girls. Another disappointment.
Another let-down.
Another father... figure.
Anyway... The point is...
The point is:...
The point is we really need to figure out where we are going to place Donatella because she's barely speaking t anyone.

Ahhhh Alexa...

It's easy roll your eyes at someone who has jumped on the 'I love Alexa Chung!' bandwagon... But it only takes a little sniff around the Internet and you'll see why this girl is so loved. Perhaps her look is actually considered when she gets dressed and isn't so effortless. But who cares?! Maybe more of us should! (Maybe she actually does throw it all together mindlessly... Bitch!) But for me it's the hair. Call it Balayage or Ombre colouring technique, but it is simpler (and more fun!) than an full head of high and low lights and Alexa is a great advert for it.
I've heard some people say it's only for browns to blondes and not dark brown or black, but that is bull. It can look amazing using a dark caramel or even reds on the end of darker hair. There are no boundaries.

The music of the moment for me. Great to chill and work to.

The Players Lounge Photoshoot.

A photoshoot I had the chance to shoot in Stenton, near Edinburgh. The hair was styled by the team at The Players Lounge in Edinburgh.
